Ilha Grande was occupied by native Indians 2000 before it was discovered in 1502 by a portuguese sailor known as André Gonçalves. It was a base for French, Dutch and British pirates, mainly during the gold mining phase in Minas Gerais.

Right off the coast between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Ilha Grande has a beautiful mountain chain including a 1000-m high peak known as Pico do Papagaio.

The island has an overall extension of 190km with a 30-km diameter and 102 beaches wiyh crystal clear water .

Flora and fauna are abundant and protected by environmental laws. Ilha Grande divides itself into the State Park and the Aventureiro biological reserve. The island has a non-for-profit organization totally dedicated to preserving the island called CODIG.

Seasons in Brazil are not as well defined as in Europe or in North America. The hottest period goes from December through March, when late afternoon rain may occur.

In winter the average temperature is 25ºC, but thermometers can reach as much as 30ºC during the day and fall to 15ºC at night.
